Los varios miles de pobladores de la isla Navidad, del Estado insular de Kiribati, han despedido el 2009, la igual que en Nueva Zelanda y Australia
Navidad (Christmas ó Kiritimati), situada a 232 kilómetros al norte de la línea ecuatorial y una de las 33 islas y atolones de esta nación del Pacífico, entró en el Año Nuevo antes que cualquier otro territorio poblado de la Tierra, a las 10:00 GMT (7:00 de Paraguay).
Sesenta minutos después, a las 11:00 GMT (8:00 de Paraguay), el Año Nuevo llegó a Niue, Islas Salomón, Nueva Zelanda y el reino de Tonga, pero en las Samoa, que pese a quedar al oeste de Navidad está al otro lado de la Línea internacional de cambio de fecha, las agujas de los relojes locales marcarán, en ese momento, la medianoche del 30 diciembre.
Así, los samoanos serán los últimos del Planeta en darle el adiós al 2009.
